Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy Recipe
An easy-to-make classic featuring tasty hamburger 'steaks' smothered in gravy and onions. It's a great way to dress up a pound of ground beef, and you probably have all the ingredients on hand!
With the single exception of the cooking sherry (which I didn't have and subbed a splash of red wine), I followed the recipe as written. It was one of those "Wow" moments when DH walked through the door and asked "What smells so good"? We loved it. I especially liked the 4 servings; one for me, 2 for DH and he took the 4th with a veggie for his lunch the next day. Will definitely do this again and posibly try it with onion soup. Great recipe!
JUST finished eating this, and it was better than expected. I followed the recipe exactly as written, except I didn't have any cooking sherry. I did double the beef broth like others suggested, but other than that I changed nothing. I made the 8 patties as recommended, and my kids (ages 3 and almost 2) each ate a whole one! This is monumental, since I've been having a hard time getting them to eat much of any kind of meat latley. This was so yummy with mashed potatoes, and there was enough gravy left over to put on the potatoes too. Thanks for sharing this awesome recipe! I will make this again and again.
Seasoned beef patties are simmered in a homemade mushroom and onion sauce to make this classic, comforting dish. Serve it with potatoes or rice.
I made as is with three small exceptions: instead of frying the patties and onions together I fried the patties first, then the onions; and I didn't add the second 1/2 tsp of seasoning salt or the onion powder (I didn't have any). The meat was juicy, the gravy tasty and just the right consistency. Delicious!!!. I will be making it frequently.
This was a big hit at our house! I more than doubled the gravy and because I didn't have any beef broth on hand, I used a combination of water, onion soup mix and chicken broth -- the sherry really makes this gravy. I also cooked the hamburgers first, alone, and then added the onions to the pan once the burgers were done and cooked them for about 15 minutes before starting the gravy. A very easy week-night recipe!
We loved it with the exception of the seasoned salt. I used Lawry's and it just tasted off to me. Next time I'll omit, but other than that, good stuff!
