Real N'awlins Muffuletta
A homemade olive salad is spread on fresh bread which is then layered with salami, ham, mortadella, mozzarella and Provolone. Great sandwich, anyone?! Note: Use round bread loaves for real muffuletta.
My Italian family loves this recipe! A crusty loaf of Italian bread is cut in half, and layered with olives, and various meats and cheeses.
A kalamata and green olive mixture fills a hollowed loaf of Italian bread; add Genoa salami, provolone cheese, tomatoes and onions and you have one delicious sandwich. It needs to be made ahead of time to allow the flavors to blend.
Bread dough is baked in a Bundt® pan and stuffed with muffuletta essentials like ham, cheese, and olives to make this giant party sandwich.
I drizzled the bread with garlic oil, just like I do for my Sub Sandwiches, We really liked these. Thanks, Suzanne, I can now make two sandwiches my Grandchildren rave about.
This sandwich is also delicious if you chop up giardiniera (pickled vegetables) and add in with the olives as the spread. This gives it a bit of kick. YUM!
This olive salad is PERFECT for the muffuletta sandwich! We had these from Central Grocery on our honeymoon, and I was trying to recreate as an anniversary present. I ommitted the cauliflower, carrots, celery seed and canola oil. I found a bakery here that makes muffuletta bread and went to a good deli to get salami, coppa, and provolone. The sandwich was so good I could hear the blues and smell the gulf! Tip: don't be temped to skimp on the amount of olive oil. Part of the beauty of the sandwich is the olive salad soaking into the dense bread to make it moist. If you haven't tried this yet... you should!
Tortilla rolls filled with ham, salami, cheese, and an olive salad make an appetizer sized version of the New Orleans traditional sandwich.
